Historical POC Birthdays

 

Dennis Edwards - American soul and R&B singer - February 3rd 1943

   Best known as the powerful lead singer of The Temptations during their late-1960s and 1970s era. Under Edwards’ leadership, the group moved toward a funkier, more socially aware sound that reflected Black American life during the Vietnam and civil rights era.

 

Rosa Parks - American civil rights activist - February 4th 1913

   Sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955 by refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger. Parks spent her life advocating for racial justice, housing equality, and voting rights.

 

Nkosi Johnson - South African activist - February 4th 1989

   He powerfully shaped public understanding of the pandemic and its effects before his death at the age of 12. He spoke publicly against stigma and discrimination, including addressing the International AIDS Conference at age 11. At the time of his death, he was the longest-surviving HIV-positive born child.

Hank Aaron - American baseball player - February 5th 1934

   Best known for breaking Babe Ruth’s home run record in 1974. He endured intense racism and death threats while chasing the record, becoming a symbol of perseverance and dignity. Outside of sports, Aaron was a strong advocate for civil rights and Black economic empowerment.

 

Melvin B. Tolson - American poet, educator and debate coach - February 6th 1898

   His work blended modernist poetry with African American history and politics. He coached the Wiley College debate team to national acclaim, which was later dramatised in The Great Debaters. His poetry challenged racism and celebrated Black intellectual life during the Harlem Renaissance and beyond.

 

Natalie Cole - American singer-songwriter and actress - February 6th 1950

   Daughter of jazz legend Nat King Cole, Natalie Cole carved out her own legacy across R&B, pop, and jazz. In addition to winning multiple Grammy Awards, Cole’s career also highlighted conversations around addiction, recovery, and resilience.

 

Bob Marley - Jamaican singer-songwriter and guitarist - February 6th 1945
   He brought reggae to the global stage, using music as a vehicle for political resistance, spirituality, and unity. Through songs like “Redemption Song,” “Get Up, Stand Up,” and “No Woman, No Cry,” Marley continues to inspire justice movements worldwide and remains a key symbol of anti-colonialism and Pan-African identity.

 

Lonnie Johnson - American jazz guitarist and singer - February 8th 1899

   Pioneering jazz and blues guitarist whose innovative single-string solos helped shape modern guitar playing. Bridging blues, jazz, and early R&B, his influence endures despite being underrecognized during his lifetime.
