Influential Black Birthdays

 

Elston Howard, American baseball catcher, February 23, 1929.

   In 1955, he became the first Black player to play for the New York Yankees. Before joining the Yankees, Howard played in the Negro Leagues.

During his 14 year MLB career from 1955 to 1968, he was a 12 time All Star and the 1963 American League MVP, becoming the first Black player in Yankees history to win the award. After retiring, he became the first Black coach in Yankees history.

 

Cham, Jamaican singer, February 24, 1977. 

   Cham, formerly known as Baby Cham until 2005, is a Jamaican dancehall artist known for his sharp lyrical style. He gained international recognition with his 2006 hit single Ghetto Story, from his major label debut album of the same name.

The song’s success inspired a wave of story themed tracks by other dancehall artists. Cham has collaborated with artists such as Alicia Keys and Damian Marley. He is signed to Atlantic Records.

 

James Cameron, American civil rights activist, February 25, 1914. 

   James Cameron was an American civil rights activist, author, and founder of America's Black Holocaust Museum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

He is the only known survivor of a 1930 lynching. After surviving the attack at age 16, he dedicated his life to educating the public about racial violence and the history of African American oppression. His memoir, A Time of Terror, recounts his experience and activism.

 

Donald Quarrie, Jamaican former track and field athlete, February 25, 1951. 

   former track and field sprinter who was one of the world’s top athletes during the 1970s. At the 1976 Summer Olympics, he won gold in the 200 meters and silver in the 100 meters.

Quarrie helped establish Jamaica’s global sprinting reputation decades before stars like Usain Bolt.

 

Fats Domino, American singer-songwriter and pianist, February 26, 1928. 

   A pioneering rock and roll pianist and singer-songwriter, with more than 65 million records sold, he was second only to Elvis Presley in 1950s rock and roll popularity.

He helped bridge rhythm and blues with mainstream rock and roll, producing 63 Billboard hits, including Ain't That a Shame and Blueberry Hill. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986 as part of its inaugural class.

 

Erykah Badu, American singer-songwriter and record producer, February 26, 1971.

   American singer, songwriter, and record producer who rose to prominence with her 1997 debut album Baduizm.

Her sound helped define the neo soul movement, earning her the nickname Queen of Neo Soul. She has won multiple Grammy Awards and remains influential for her experimental style and culturally conscious music.

 

Marian Anderson, American contralto, February 27, 1897. 

   One of the most celebrated contraltos of the 20th century. In 1939, after being denied the opportunity to sing at Constitution Hall because of segregation, she performed an open-air concert at the Lincoln Memorial before 75,000 people. In 1955, she became the first Black singer to perform with the Metropolitan Opera.

 

Rozonda Thomas, American singer and dancer, February 27, 1971. 

   Rozonda Thomas, known professionally as Chilli, is a member of the Grammy Award winning R and B group TLC. TLC became one of the best-selling girl groups of the 1990s with hits such as No Scrubs and Waterfalls. Thomas is also known for her work as a dancer and television personality.

 

Bubba Smith, American professional football player and actor, February 28, 1945,

   Charles Aaron Bubba Smith was an American NFL defensive end and actor. He played for the Baltimore Colts, Oakland Raiders, and Houston Oilers. After football, he became widely known for his role as Moses Hightower in the film series Police Academy.

 

Rae Dawn Chong, Canadian actress, February 28, 1961. 

   Rae Dawn Chong is a Canadian actress who made her film debut in Stony Island. She gained wider recognition for her performance in Quest for Fire, earning the Genie Award for Best Actress. She later starred in films such as Commando.

 

Harry Belafonte, American singer, actor and civil rights activist, March 1, 1927. 

   He popularised calypso music with international audiences in the 1950s and 1960s. His breakthrough album Calypso became the first LP by a single artist to sell more than one million copies. 

Beyond music, Belafonte was a close supporter of Martin Luther King Jr. and a major figure in the American civil rights movement, using his fame to advocate for social justice throughout his life.
