What is that?

Adenomyosis is a condition in which endometrial tissue grows into the muscle layer of the uterine wall. This tissue continues to behave like endometrium and can lead to severe menstrual pain, bleeding disorders, and an enlarged uterus.

Causes:
The exact causes are not fully understood, but hormonal changes are suspected to play a role.
Symptoms:
The most common symptoms are severe menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea), prolonged or very heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia), and pelvic pain.
Diagnosis:
Diagnosis is usually made through a gynecological examination, ultrasound, and/or an MRI.
Treatment:
Treatment depends on the symptoms and the desire to have children and may include medication (e.g., hormonal medications), surgery (hysterectomy or conservative procedures), or a combination of both.
Prevalence:
The exact incidence is unknown because diagnosis can be difficult, but it is observed in many women.
