NON-BINARY is an umbrella term for gender identities that transcend the gender binary of man and woman. A non-binary person's gender identity may align with neither man or woman or align only partially within the gender binary. Some are genderfluid, meaning their gender identity and sensed connection to different genders fluctuates over time. Others may feel detached from the concept of gender altogether. They are all NON-BINARY and - most importantly - they are all valid!
TRANS NON-BINARY?
Yep, NON-BINARY inherently falls under the transgender umbrella! For allies, it's important to remember that being trans is not exclusively about modifying one's body through surgery or hormone therapy to be perceived as a cisgender man or woman. Body dysphoria is _the medical criteria for accessing gender-affirming treatments_, which has become wider society's narrow-minded and factually incorrect understanding of trans identities. Body dysphoria is NOT a prerequisite or criteria for being trans, and we are very much the authority on that, thank you very much.
^ The above is one (possible) reason as to why non-binary people, like me, sometimes choose not to call themselves transgender as often or at all; it is so heavily associated with the gender binary that it feels uncomfortable, for now.
