Hanukkah (or Chanukah) is Judaism’s “festival of lights” celebration. Since Hanukkah often falls in December, It’s sometimes associated with Christmas in popular culture.
The story passed down tells us that the Jewish Maccabees reentered the temple in Jerusalem and found only a tiny bit of oil, barely enough to keep their lamps lit one day. A Hanukkah miracle happened and the oil burned for eight consecutive days.
This year starting on Wednesday 25th of December, Jews gather with family and friends to light one additional candle in the menorah — a multibranched candelabra.
Jews whether Reform, Conservative, or Orthodox, celebrate by bringing light into the darkness and emphasizing that even a small effort can have a transforming effect. The menorah is often placed where it can be seen from the street such as doorways or windowsills and thereby spreading God’s light to bypassers.
In some countries, the lighting of menorahs has spread into the city scape including public landmarks, parks and streets, growing more prominent in recent years.
Jewish people believe that it's important to help make the world better for all, so in addition to celebrating Hanukkah by lighting menorahs, spending time with family and friends, sharing traditional dishes, many Jews consider it an important aspect to donate to charity or give back to society through social work.
