As their only clue being the riddle about the Mother City, Showtime and goKat next arrived in Cape Town with mixed feelings.
Their efforts to locate their friend, Rori, had been unsuccessful in Athens, so they decided that maybe continuing to hunt gemstones would bring them closer to locating her, too.
In order to cover the most ground, they decided to split up in hopes of finding her somewhere in the vibrant city.
Showtime got to work on designing some missing person posters to spread around town, while goKat asked the locals if any of them had seen Rori.
After spending an entire day searching, the pair had still failed to locate Rori.
As the sun began to set, they met at the Greenmarket Square to share any clues. They discussed their day, and Showtime also showed off his new, shiny necklace.
“It says S for Showtime,” he joked in an attempt to cheer up his friend.
By bizarre coincidence, they spotted a busy-looking Gemma near a small clothing stall in the city. Out of curiosity, they decided to approach.
“Why do you keep showing up to the same places as us?” asked Showtime playfully.
Gemma looked him up and down before making her response. “I am a woman in the business of sharing my exquisite wares. This is but one of my multiple stops for the summer.”
“Vacationing while working? Sounds like a great deal to me!”
Gemma paused for a moment. “Yes, but no destination compares to home. I am counting down the hours until my return.”
They stood quietly for a moment. goKat, filled with anxiety about her friend, could not refrain from asking questions. “Gemma, we lost our friend back in Athens and are very confused. Maybe you saw her back there. Do you recall a woman with blue highlights and an eye for fashion?”
Gemma’s eyes lit up at that as she let out a short chuckle. “Oh yes, the one who started crying tears of joy when she walked into my shop here in Cape Town. I hope that you are able to be reunited with your friend.”
As the duo were making out to leave, Gemma added, “I thought there were four of you traveling together.”
Showtime paused before answering, slightly confused. “No, just three. It’s Rori, goKat, and myself.”
“I was under the impression that the mysterious man was part of your group,” Gemma frowned.
“He is also a recurring customer of mine – he is usually alone, but seemed interested in Rori.” She then seemingly vanished into her sea of customers before they could ask any more questions.
With all this information, they began to worry that the mysterious man had kidnapped Rori.
At that very moment, as if someone had been listening, goKat received an odd message on her phone – a video of Rori in Cape Town!
Before she could respond, the message deleted itself, but then a second more cryptic one followed. She hoped for a third with more information, but it never came. With no other option, the pair realized that they had to decode the cryptic text.
“Near a cove that is untrue,
A beach winning awards of blue
With all the bravery you can muster,
Look inside the brightly coloured structures”
goKat, needing some fresh air to process, went for a walk alone. Meanwhile, Showtime whipped out his classy pink goSupermodel phone and called headquarters. The line picked up.
“Hello?” he asked. “Is SWM available?”
While looking at the dark surroundings on her walk, goKat noticed movement and heard footsteps near some bushes. Determined, she followed the sounds and before she knew it, she was running in the desperate hopes of finding her friend sooner…Until she ran head first into someone.
While she apologized profusely, the other person, dressed in all black, stood up and scurried off in a different direction. In the commotion, it seemed he had accidentally left something behind; a familiar necklace, with the letter S. No longer shiny, but dirty on the ground.
