(Summary at the bottom)
International lesbian day is celebrated on October 8th and has been observed since 1980. This day is a celebration of lesbian history, culture, community and diversity. It is also meant to bring awareness and visibility to ongoing issues and discrimination lesbians all over the world face. Celebrations include activism both online and in person, education in the form of sharing lesbian media and history, as well as local events and meetups. Where lesbian visibility day is meant to be more political and focused on discrimination and erasure, international lesbian day is more about pride, joy and celebration of lesbianism and lesbians.
Lesbians & lesbianism
Traditionally lesbianism has been defined as attraction to women, but as both acceptance and knowledge of non-binary and gender diverse individuals grew, the definitions have evolved to be more inclusive and welcoming to lesbians who do not fit the rigid gender binary. So by modern terms, a lesbian is a woman or a non-binary person who’s exclusively attracted to women and non-binary people. Or to put it short, a person who experiences exclusive sapphic attraction.
The lesbian identity isn’t defined by a person's past relationships. Some lesbians have always known exactly who they are, while some discover their sexuality later in life. Regardless of personal origins, what all lesbians have in common is love and dedication to women.
