Dyslexia Awareness Week is an annual and international campaign held to challenge the misconceptions around dyslexia and celebrate the strengths and talents of dyslexic individuals. Dyslexia is often misunderstood form of neurodivergence that affects around 10% of the world population. It is the most common form of learning disability.



What is dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a learning disability which primarily affects reading and writing skills, however it may also affect speaking, mathematical skills and language learning. It is still important to remember that dyslexia may affect other areas as well because the cause of dyslexia is with processing information. It is important to remember that dyslexia does not affect intelligence, actually dyslexic individuals are usually extremely creative and really good problem solvers.



Dyslexic strengths include but are not limited to:

  1. Good problem solving
  2. Creativity
  3. Observant
  4. High levels of empathy
  5. Big picture thinking
  6. Strong imagination



What should you do?

  • Be patient, give everyone the time they need to read.
  • Don't judge anyones typos or grammar, only correct if asked to do so.
  • Keep your texts clear and easy to read where you can, for example with short paragraphs and simple fonts.
