Afro-Punk/Afro-Alternative: Our EBHM Shop Drop x Decolonise Punk Fest
(Summary at the bottom)
Punk has never really been about following the rules. So for this year’s EBHM Shop Drop, we wanted to do something a little different.
This drop takes inspiration from Afro-Punk and Afro-Alternative styles, from the music and artists behind the scenes to the people turning alternative fashion into something completely their own. Think bold looks, DIY details, big hair, chains, leather, colour and a bit of attitude.
Where the inspiration comes from
We looked at a bunch of artists and creators while putting these stunning looks made by gDs Mayu and St4rlet together. Among them: NovaTwins, Sardonyx Lestrange, Edith Victoria of Meet Me @ The Altar, CyKeem White, JPEGMAFIA, Rico Nasty and Junglepussy.
One of the looks is directly inspired by an outfit worn by @bambiix2 (https://www.instagram.com/bambiix2/) at Afropunk (https://visitlink.bio/afropunk).
Before a single piece made it into the collection, every reference image was traced back to credit the people behind it, because the artists and creators shaping this culture deserve recognition, not just to have their style borrowed.
Each outfit also comes with two hairstyle options: an Afro/protective style and a non-protective/non-afro alternative, so that everyone can enjoy the drop while keeping natural and protective hairstyles specifically for Black users.
From Afro-Punk to Decolonise Fest
And what better day to drop this than the day Decolonise Fest kicks off in London?
Taking place on 3rd – 4th October, Decolonise Fest is a DIY, non-profit punk festival organised by and for punx of colour. It has been creating space for punks of colour since 2017, celebrating the artists and communities who have helped shape punk while making room for the next generation to claim the stage!
That felt like the perfect place to shine a light on while launching our own Afro-Punk/Afro-Alternative-inspired drop. Black artists and communities have been shaping alternative scenes for decades and Decolonise Fest is part of that story today. So while you’re checking out the new Shop Drop, go check out the festival too, see who’s playing and discover some of the artists and punks keeping these scenes alive.
