(Summary at the bottom)
On the 19th of August we are standing still for WorldHumanitarianDay. This day honors the people who dedicate their lives to helping others during wars, natural disasters, disease outbreaks and other possible crises. At the same time, we remember humanitarian workers who have lost their lives while protecting and supporting people in need.
This day was established by the United Nations in 2003 after the bombing of the UN headquarters in Baghdad during the Iraq War. The attack claimed the lives of 22 humanitarian workers and highlighted the immense risks aid workers face while assisting people caught in conflict and crises.
Whether humanitarian workers provide food, clean water, shelter, medical care or emotional support, they help millions of people every year. Their work often takes place in extremely difficult and dangerous circumstances, yet they continue to show up for people when they need it most.
Protecting those who protect humanity
The theme of World Humanitarian Day 2026 is "Protecting Those Who Protect Humanity", with the motto: “The time for concern is over. The time for consequence is now”.
As mentioned before, humanitarian workers often put their own lives at risk while helping others. They work in conflict zones or areas affected by natural disasters, where access to safety, healthcare and essential supplies can be limited.
Let the theme of this year be a reminder for all of us that the people who are dedicating their lives to helping others also deserve protection, respect and support. Humanitarian action is built on the belief that every person deserves dignity, regardless of who they are, where they come from or the circumstances they live in.
Small acts make a difference
It isn’t possible for everyone to travel across the world to provide humanitarian aid, however kindness can and needs to be shared much closer to home as well.
A supportive message can help a friend through a difficult time. Standing up against bullying can make someone feel less alone. Even treating others with kindness and respect can brighten someone's day. No matter how small these actions may seem, they will contribute to creating a safer and more welcoming place, both offline and online.
