Ica is a region located in the southwest area of the country, sitting along the Peruvian coast. It consists mostly of desert terrain. People recognize the area for the history of its civilizations, the heritage of its residents and the formations of its land. Over the decades, researchers and travelers have visited this part of the country to study how early societies adapted to life in an environment without much water. 

Long ago, the area served as the center for the Paracas culture, a society that appeared, according to research data, around 800 BC. One of the ways historians remember this civilization is through the production of textiles. Weavers from the settlements created garments and burial mantles with embroidery that still holds a significant place in human history. They applied the block color technique, developed around 200 BC and consiting of stitching the outlines of shapes onto the fabric and filling the broad areas with bright colors, and sourced dyes from plants and insects, creating pigments that have survived for more than 2000 years.

Apart the Paracas culture, Ica's landscape features mysteries of nature and archaeology. The plains of the region house the Nazca Lines, which are geoglyphs that past inhabitants etched directly onto the floor of the plateau. By moving rocks and earth, they mapped out animals and shapes across kilometers of land. Not far from these drawings sits Huacachina, which is a lagoon that forms a natural oasis, with mounds of sand surrounding the water on all sides.

The region also houses the Paracas National Reserve, which was established back in 1975 and spans an area of 335000 hectares, and protects desert and marine ecosystems that thrive in the waters of the Pacific Ocean.

A short distance from the shore we also have the Ballestas Islands. Rocks emerge from the sea, which provide a habitat for thousands of birds and marine mammals. Visitors often take boats to observe colonies of penguins, sea lions and pelicans. The current of the ocean brings nutrients to the surface, creating a food source that supports this wildlife in an environment that receives almost no rain.

Ica also houses villages with folklore traditions. According to historians, women accused of being witches were being hunted down for their pagan beliefs and fled south to the Ica valley, to the village of Cachiche, also known as the "Witches' Village." After finding refuge in the coastal town, residents passed down their knowledge of plants and remedies through generations. From the 1980s onwards, people from across the country continuously travel to the village to seek medical advice and treatments. 

A monument of a woman stands near the center of the town, believed locally to portray one of the most famous witches of the region, Julia Hernández Pecho Viuda de Díaz.

Music and movement also shape the heritage of the country. Local citizens celebrate their cultural identity through the Marinera, a historical dance in which a man and a woman perform a routine of courtship. They step across the floor while holding handkerchiefs in their hands, waving the cloth in the air as they circle one another. The performers never touch, yet their steps tell a story.

Communities host competitions throughout the year, gathering crowds to watch the couples keep the tradition alive.
