Africa Day

(Summary at the bottom)

Across the African continent and throughout the global diaspora, May 25th marks Africa Day – a day dedicated to celebrating African unity, history, cultures and progress. The day commemorates the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in 1963, the predecessor to today’s African Union (AU)U).

With more than 50 countries and thousands of languages, cultures and traditions, Africa is considered the most diverse continent in the world! The continent is also known for its incredible biodiversity, from deserts and rainforests to savannas, mountains and coastlines that support unique ecosystems and wildlife found nowhere else on earth.

This year’s African Union theme focuses on “Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems”, highlighting the importance of access to clean water, sanitation and environmental sustainability for communities across the continent and beyond. Access to clean water remains a major global issue affecting health, education, food security and quality of life for millions of people worldwide.

To help visualise the urgency of this issue, the Water Crisis Clock shows how many people are currently living in water-scarce areas. It also shows how water availability may change over time. This serves as a powerful reminder that the water crisis is not a distant thought; in fact, it’s something that is already affecting communities, and it requires global awareness and immediate call to action. You can find out more information about the Water Crisis Clock here: https://worldwater.io/#water_scarcity

As a collective society, there are many small ways we can contribute and raise awareness, such as:

  • Being more mindful of water usage at home, for example, by taking shorter showers or avoiding unnecessary waste (don’t forget to turn the water off while shampooing!).

  • Learning more about water inequality and environmental issues affecting different countries in the world.

  • Supporting sustainability habits, clean-up initiatives in your area or organizations focused on water access.

  • Be mindful of our digital environmental footprint, including unnecessary AI usage.

  • Remembering that access to clean water is not something equally available to everyone.
