Today, on March 28th, it is Earth Hour, and we would like to dedicate the evening to this special, yet rather important movement. Read more about it and feel free to participate as well!

What is Earth Hour?

Earth Hour is a worldwide movement organised by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), developed in 2006 in Australia. However, the very first Earth Hour was in Sydney, Australia, on March 31st 2007. The event is held annually and encourages individuals, communities and businesses to give an hour for Earth by switching off non-essential electric lights for one hour. It is usually held from 8:30 to 9:30 PM on the last Saturday of March, as a symbol of commitment to the planet.

The hour presents an opportunity to disconnect from screens, reconnect with nature, and enjoy simple activities such as a walk outdoors, stargazing, or a candlelit dinner. Though it lasts just one hour, the impact of Earth Hour extends far beyond, serving as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved through collective action.

This year, Earth Hour 2026 marked the 20th anniversary of the global environmental movement, with the theme ‘Give an Hour to Earth,’ encouraging individuals, communities, and organisations worldwide to dedicate one hour toward actions supporting environmental sustainability and conservation.

Fun facts:

We thought it might be interesting to read some fun facts about Earth Hour. We have decided to list some of them.

•  It is one of the world’s biggest environmental movements for nature and climate, organised by WWF and partners across the world – but led by the Earth Hour community.

•  It has been 20 amazing years since Earth Hour began in 2007 as a small grassroots movement in Sydney, Australia.

•  It is more about rebuilding a connection than just switching off. Earth Hour is the moment when local and global communities unite and switch off to show they care about the future of our planet.

• Every year, hundreds of millions of people, famous landmarks, local businesses and community groups across the world take part in Earth Hour events and activities.

• In 2020, Earth Hour went fully digital for the first time in the UK. As well as switching off lights, many people connected online by joining digital events and live streams during the hour.

• Earth Hour is helping to tackle deforestation. The world’s first ‘Earth Hour Forest’ was launched by WWF Uganda, in East Africa, as part of their Earth Hour 2013 campaign to restore 2,700 hectares of degraded land.

• Your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man got a bit more environmentally friendly. Spider-Man is the first superhero to become a global ambassador for Earth Hour in 2014, bringing much-needed attention and global outreach for the Earth Hour movement.

• Earth Hour made it to space. In 2015, Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti joined the Earth Hour movement from space by holding a sign ‘Change Climate Change’ floating inside the International Space Station.

• It led to a brilliant green innovation for charging phones. There are ‘solar trees’ set up across Shanghai for Earth Hour, which allows the public to charge their mobile devices with renewable green energy.

• Earth Hour happens in March at 8:30-9:30 pm local time on the last Saturday of March. Millions of homes across the UK and the world will switch off to show they care about the future of our planet.

Events on the site

In order to celebrate Earth Hour, we have planned a couple of events. You can read more about it below:

• At 20:30 / 8:30 PM CET, we encourage everyone to log out for one hour.

We might occasionally surprise some random and lucky users with some gifts!

• Ezri will host an "Art in the Dark" challenge that starts around 18:30 CET.
The forum will be locked for the duration of Earth Hour, but all the information about the challenge will be released an hour before, so you have time to prepare.

• Jigsaw will host an “The Maker’s Hour” show-and-tell event.

• There will also be a dress-up game today, hosted by the wonderful slvmoon25. 

•More events may appear during the day, so keep your eyes peeled! All events will be linked in the OP comment, as they appear.
