Pride Flag Recolour Limit Exception

Concern was raised that the current recolour limit was making it difficult for users to create content for pride. There are lots and lots of different pride flags and many designers want to be as inclusive as possible. So we have come up with some exception rules that should give you a bit more freedom when it comes to pride content.

We have created some visual examples that should help make it clear. For the purpose of these examples I have used the demisexual flag since it has a slightly more unique shape.

Be mindful to not accidentally represent a different flag than you intended, as some flags can be close in colours, but have widely different meaning and context. Obvious resemblance to the highlighted flags listed below will be rejected:

  • - The colours of the Genderflux flag resembles the colours of the MAP flag.
  •
  • - The colours of the Bisexual flag resembles the Cisgender flag.
  •
  • - The colours of the Genderqueer flag resembles the colours of the Suffragette flag.
  •
  • - The colours of the Super Straight flag.
  •
  • - Please do the Straight Ally flag and not the Straight flag. (You can still create the pattern of the straight flag considering it is a very common pattern/colour combo however it will not be accepted when added as a recolour to another flag item.)
  •

Note that you may still create the type of items and designs that are not listed as exceptions. The only difference is that these items are not legible for any exceptions and are expected to follow the normal recolour guidelines.

We also ask that you don’t submit normal handheld flags or other plain scenery flag items. If you want to create pride items please try to create something unique and make them part of proper items like e.g. tops, dresses, bags etc.

You may adjust the shade and value of the flag colours to fit your style preference. However, be aware that straying from the normal hues and values of a flag might make your design look like a different flag than intended. Some flags are very similar so try to be mindful of how you draw the flags.

When submitting designs, including pride flags please put a list of which flags you included in the design description.

You may exceed the re-colour limit if the following is true:

  • - The item includes a pride flag. The flag can be of any size and you may rotate it and flip it, but what flag it is must still be clear.

  • - The flag does not have to cover the whole item. It can be something like a small little print or it can be turned into a pattern provided that the pattern stays true to the flag(but you may still flip and rotate the flag in the pattern).
  •
  •
  • - You may make the different elements of the flag be part of the item construction. It does not have to be just a fabric print.

  •
  •
  • - You may add extra elements to your item as long as the flag is still properly legible.

These are the restrictions for when exceptions do not apply. You may still create items like shown below but for items like this you are expected to follow the normal recolour guidelines.

- It is not enough for just the general colour to be there. The flag has to be properly represented in the ways shown in examples above for you to be allowed to exceed the colour limit.

- The pattern of the flag should not be changed and the colours should remain in the same relative place.

- For you to be allowed to exceed the recolour limit it must only be for the purpose of representing more flags. And should not be used to add extra colours of elements that are not part of the flag. You may recolour in the way shown below but they will not be exempt from the recolour limit.
