There are many many techniques that promise to make you become lucid in your dreams. Different techniques work for different people so don't worry if what works for many other people doesn't work for you. There are some basics to know about inducing a lucid dream and that are crucial for any technique to work. We'll start with those.
- Keep a dream journal. This is important for a lot of things that help you to lucid dream. Improving your dream memory, you can identify things that are common in your dreams and that will, once recognized as such, make you question if you're in a dream next time you see them. Writing down your dreams also shows your brain that dreams are important to you and make you more aware of your dreams and the process of dreaming. Tip: Right after waking up, ask yourself what your dreams were about and retell them in your head or out loud without moving first. Then you can move and write everything down. That way you remember more of your dreams than moving to write the dreams down instantly after waking up.
- Question your waking state. Throughout the day, make it a point to question if you're waking or dreaming. Even if you think you're sure you're awake, really question it for that moment. What if you were dreaming right now? Ask yourself if were you are makes sense, why you are here, what you just did and what you were going to do. Tip: Set a specific part of the day or task to ask your question. Everytime you walk through a door, you wash your hands, you look up at the sky or something like that.
- Get enough sleep. This is crucial to give yourself the opportunity to lucid dream. Our sleep cycles though different stages of sleep. For us dreamers, the REM (rapid eye movement) stage is the most important. The longer we sleep, the longer the REM stage periods get and therefore the possibility of you recognizing you're dreaming increases. Also, a healthy sleep schedule is good for you in general and keeps you happy and healthy.
