And thats not the case right now, so we should acknowledge it and work our best to change it. And as long as people think their joy is more important than others, we have to keep working on it. |

Or can we also look on the bright side of life and stop crying We should not stop lookng at awful stuff just because it isnt nice to look at. People are getting hurt in the process, we should try to stop it. |

There was a girl in my class who was black, and some of the remarks teachers and classmates would make towards her were so hurtful, I could literally see her bite through the pain and forcing a laugh. It was meant to be funny but clearly she couldn't laugh. My heart hurts when I hear/read these kind of stories |

The original story states that when you've been naughty/misbehaved, black pete will put you in his sack (they carry a sack for the presents) and they'll take you with them to Spain. That's where sinterklaas and his petes live during the rest of the year. They'd also hit you with "roe" (rod?) if you've been naughty. As an addition to that, the petes are doing all the work for a white man. When little kids hear the story about not behaving and black pete, they usually get quite scared of them. And when they're all black, they can associate it with a group of people, which are POC. I hope that answers your question! Please note that I'm a white woman, so I'm priviliged in this situation and don't know everything into full detail! <3 Also black Pete’s costume has been linked to a certain type of slave in like the 1600’s or something? At least that’s what I read in an article, |

It's when people who are pro-black pete interfere that things go sideways, because they are the ones causing an uproar. Not the other way around. It’s generally known by now if one side shows up, the other one is soon to follow. No matter who ‘gets there first’. The little kids still believe in the magic, demonstrations around the intocht will only hurt and confuse and upset the kiddos there. They are NOT the ones who should have the effects |

Because they were teased, bullied, ‘threatened’ around black Pete. With bad intentions. But I just hate the fact that innocent kids are caught in the middle of the discussions (literally) |
![]() | Destroya wrote: well how else are you supposed to demonstrate then lol? there will always be kids cuz u know.. it's for kids........ Just go out in a field somewhere where’s no ‘sinterklaas intocht’ and fight it out over there. Not at the physical intocht! |

However, in a lot of smaller villages they still celebrate sinterklaas with black pete as sinterklaas' helpers. I honestly find it disgusting how people can be this ignorant and luckily there's this activism group here in the netherlands called "KO zwarte piet", which means "kick out black pete". I used to love it when I was little and people with small kids still celebrate sinterklaas, mostly without any racism involved. The little kids only care about the presents and the excitement, not about what color pete is. I'm really really reallly hoping sinterklaas will stay a tradition for the kids, but without any racist aspects involved. And luckily, we're making steps towards it by spreading awareness about black pete :) I feel so sad for the darkskinned little kids who have been called ‘black Pete’ or threatened to be taken to Spain because they are ‘black Pete’. |
![]() | The debates and fights and discussions around it have ruined it completely for me. Especially the demonstrations around kids. No matter your opinion, you’re an a-hole to do that. |
